There are a lot of reasons why people don’t go to the gym. Maybe you don’t have the money or the time to commit to weekly gym visits. Maybe you simply don’t have a gym in your area.

Maybe you are uncomfortable with the idea of working out around strangers.

Whatever your reasons are, there are still some easy ways to lose weight without a gym membership. Here are some tips to get you started.

Create Realistic Goals

One of the most important keys to weight loss is creating realistic goals. That includes long-term goals, as well as short-term goals. Keep in mind that you can set a goal of inches or pounds that you want to lose, but you should also decide how quickly you want to accomplish those goals. Set yourself up to succeed, not to fail, by trying to lose realistic amounts. For example, it’s realistic to want to lose a pound in a week, but it is not realistic to want to lose 10 pounds in a week.

You also need to set goals when it comes to what you eat and how you work out. For example, don’t just say that you are going to go for a walk on Wednesdays. Be sure to decide how far you want to walk. You can invest in an inexpensive pedometer that will tell you how far you travel, or you can simply use landmarks that you know.

If it’s one mile down to the end of your street, set a goal of walking down and back (2 miles) or halfway down and back (1 mile).

Give Yourself Incentives

The next step is to give yourself incentives. Those incentives can be big or small. For instance, if you want to lose 5 pounds in a month, you could tell yourself that you will treat yourself to a night at the movies, if you meet your goal.

Maintain Accountability

Accountability is another big part of losing weight. If you aren’t going to be held accountable for your actions, it will be easier to slip back into unhealthy routines. One way to hold yourself accountable is to set goals for yourself, as I mentioned a minute ago.

Another way is to tell your friends or family members what your goals are. In fact, you could even choose to exercise with a friend or a family member. That way you’ll always have someone else to help you to stay on track. Exercising with a friend is also more fun than exercising alone.

Redefine “Exercise” in Your Mind

If you are avoiding going to the gym because you don’t think that “exercise” is fun, it’s time to redefine the word “exercise.” Exercise does not have to be boring or unpleasant. You can make it fun. Here are some ideas of fun ways to exercise:

Jog with a friend.
Go swimming in a pool, lake, or pond.
Play a sport.
Take your dog for a walk.
Play with your kids in the back yard.
Ride a bicycle.
Go hiking.
The exercise possibilities are endless, even if you’re on a tight budget.

Use Your Budget, Time, and Personal Items Wisely

Finally, be sure to use your budget, time, and personal items wisely. For instance, if you don’t have exercise equipment, improvise. You can use canned goods instead of weights, go up and down stairs instead of walking on a stair stepper machine, or go for a walk outside instead of walking on a treadmill.

In no time at all, you’ll see that you don’t need a gym to lose weight.
